Beginning today, February 13, Apple’s TV app is now available for download from the Google Play Store, offering a pleasant surprise for Android users.
This app includes all the familiar features that iOS users enjoy, such as access to Apple TV+ and the MLS Season Pass. It is accessible in over 100 regions worldwide, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. This means you can log in or register for Apple TV+ and MLS Season Pass through the app just as you would on any iOS device. However, keep in mind that your device—whether it’s a phone, tablet, or foldable—needs to run Android 10 or later to ensure compatibility, especially for a seamless Google TV experience.
While the Apple TV app has been tailored for Android, many of the popular features remain intact. For instance, you can view all the movies and shows you are currently watching across various devices in the ‘Continue Watching’ section. Additionally, your ‘Watchlist’ of saved titles will still be available for future viewing.
The homepage retains a similar layout to that of iOS devices, featuring rows of grouped content organized by categories such as new releases, trending titles, most-watched, and what’s currently available for streaming. A new section called ‘Must See Hits’ on Apple TV+ is expected to replace the existing ‘For You’ section found on iOS. Notably, the ‘Store’ tab at the bottom of the app is absent, as iTunes store content will not be included.
This shift in content organization suggests that Apple is aiming to attract new subscribers to its streaming service, especially considering it has the smallest subscriber base among major streaming platforms.
The timing of the Apple TV app’s launch on Android is advantageous for the company, allowing more viewers to stream popular shows like the second season of Severance, as well as new Apple TV+ films like The Gorge, which premieres this Friday, February 14, coinciding with Valentine’s Day.
Additionally, this rollout aligns perfectly with the upcoming 30th season of Major League Soccer, which starts next weekend on February 22, giving MLS Season Pass subscribers access to exclusive content, analysis, and coverage. Sports enthusiasts will also have the opportunity to enjoy weekly games from Friday Night Baseball and Sunday Night Soccer, a new addition for Apple TV+ subscribers in 2025, along with all the top Apple TV+ shows and movies. Be sure to stay tuned to TechRadar for updates on how the Android version of the app compares to its iOS counterpart, as well as any other differences we identify between the two. In the meantime, we’d love to hear your thoughts on the Apple TV app for Android in the comments below.
