Huawei Boosts Smartwatch Sales by Registering Them as Medical Devices

A recent report reveals that Huawei is marketing its smartwatches as medical devices to boost sales of its wrist wearables. The Chinese technology company is leveraging medical-grade certifications to draw more consumer interest. Among its products is the Watch D2, launched in November of the previous year in China, which has received Class II medical device registration.
This classification comes with distinct advantages for consumers, as some Chinese buyers can use their medical insurance to purchase the Watch D2, rather than paying out-of-pocket. The news quickly gained traction on social media, leading to sold-out stocks in various Chinese pharmacies, with some customers waiting up to 20 days for new stock. In Shanghai, one pharmacy reported over 500 people in line for the device, which requires an appointment for purchase and activation.
Many online users have shared advice on how to take advantage of the smartwatch’s medical device status to utilize medical insurance funds as a discount for the purchase. In China, 95% of the population benefits from a medical insurance scheme that provides monthly funds for medical expenses, which can include medical devices like blood pressure monitors but not other purchases. Bloomberg reports that the classification of the Huawei Watch D2 as a medical device has significantly increased its sales in China.
The Watch D2 features medical-grade capabilities powered by the TruSense System, providing users with prompt and accurate health reports. Unlike Apple Watches, which are not classified as medical wearables in China, Huawei’s devices have a competitive edge in the market. However, concerns have been raised regarding the appropriateness of labeling a multifunctional device as medical. The Health Insurance Bureau in China has already restricted the purchase of such devices and may take further action soon.
