IKEA is taking a big step into the smart-home ecosystem by announcing a new line of smart devices designed from the ground up for the Matter universal connectivity standard. Starting in January, the company plans to launch over 20 smart lights, sensors, remotes and other accessories that work across Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Samsung SmartThings without brand lock-in.
The goal behind this move is two-fold: to make smart-home technology more affordable and easier to use, and to offer more flexibility by letting customers integrate devices from multiple brands into the same system. A big part of the strategy is the updated IKEA smart-home hub, the “DIRIGERA,” which now functions as a Matter Controller and Thread border router—meaning it can directly manage Matter-enabled devices and mesh networks within the home.
IKEA emphasises that its smart-home ambition isn’t about flooding the market with gadgets, but about building everyday products that adapt to how people live. The Matter-based lineup is intended to feel familiar, straightforward and accessible—even for first-time smart-home buyers. While early devices focus on lighting, sensors and remotes, IKEA says more categories will follow later in the year.
For consumers, this announcement signals a shift: if you’ve hesitated to enter the smart-home space because of compatibility concerns or cost, IKEA’s Matter-ready range offers a more inclusive path. For the smart-home industry, it serves as a reminder that interoperability may finally be gaining real momentum.
