Google Home App Gets Gemini AI for Smarter Device Control

Google has introduced a major overhaul to its Home app, placing its Gemini AI assistant at the heart of a smarter, more conversational smart home experience. The redesign reflects a shift in how users interact with connected devices, moving away from rigid menus and toward fluid, natural language control.

The updated app allows users to speak casually with Gemini to manage lights, thermostats, cameras, and routines. Instead of tapping through multiple screens, a simple question like “Is the kitchen light still on?” or “Lock the doors at 10 PM” triggers real-time actions across the home. Gemini interprets intent, context, and device status to respond accurately — even when commands are vague or layered.

A new dashboard layout adapts to user behavior, surfacing frequently used devices and automations while minimizing clutter. Tiles resize and reposition dynamically, creating a personalized control center that evolves with daily habits. The app also introduces a timeline view of household activity, offering a clear snapshot of what’s happened and when.

For users with Nest devices, Gemini adds deeper intelligence. It can summarize video history, identify patterns, and provide narrative alerts like “Someone approached the garage at 3:15 PM.” These insights go beyond motion detection, offering context that helps users make informed decisions about home security.

Google is also launching a premium tier called Home+, which includes Gemini Live — a continuous conversation mode that eliminates the need for wake words. Subscribers gain access to advanced automations, deeper device integrations, and priority support. The rollout begins with iOS, with Android support following shortly.

This redesign positions Google to compete more aggressively in the smart home space, where intuitive control and AI-driven personalization are becoming key differentiators. By embedding Gemini into the daily rhythm of home life, Google is betting that users will embrace a more natural, responsive way to manage their environments.
