Apple Blocks iOS 18.6.2 Downgrades After iOS 26

Apple has officially stopped signing iOS 18.6.2, closing the door for anyone who has upgraded to iOS 26 and wants to roll back. The stable version of iOS 26 was released on September 15, and with this move, Apple ensures that users who have taken the step forward cannot revert to older builds. This change also applies to iPadOS 18.6.2 and tvOS 18.6, leaving iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV owners locked into their current software once upgraded.

The company’s practice of ending support for previous versions is part of its security-first approach. Each signed version of iOS passes a server-side verification check before installation, and once Apple withdraws signing, that version can no longer be installed on any device. Apple explains that this policy helps prevent users from running outdated and potentially vulnerable software.

For those who have not yet installed iOS 26, continuing on iOS 18 remains an option, but once the switch is made, going back is impossible. Early impressions of iOS 26 show that it is a substantial upgrade, introducing a refreshed design and new features, although some minor bugs have been reported. These issues are expected to be addressed in upcoming maintenance updates.

Ultimately, Apple’s decision aligns with its long-standing strategy: encouraging users to stay on the latest version for the best performance and security. While some power users may prefer having the choice to downgrade, the majority benefit from a consistent and more secure software environment. For now, iOS 26 is the future, and Apple seems intent on keeping it that way.
