Apple is said to be developing its first smart glasses, expected to arrive around 2027, that will extend its wearable ecosystem beyond phones, tablets, and mixed-reality headsets. These glasses are not anticipated to feature full augmented-reality displays at first, but will include key hardware like cameras, microphones, audio output, and built-in AI to interpret the environment. They may allow users to record photos and video hands-free, get real-time insights about surroundings, and interact by voice or gesture.
A specially adapted, low-power chip is reportedly under development for the device, one that builds upon Apple’s experience with its watch line, designed to support these intelligence features without draining battery too fast. Mass production is expected to begin in 2027, with shipments in the 3-5 million unit range in the first year.
These rumored glasses are just one item among many in Apple’s upcoming product roadmap following iPhone 17. Planned upgrades include next-generation iPads and MacBooks powered by the M5 chip, a more affordable variant of the iPhone 17 for the following year, updates to Apple’s Vision Pro spatial headset (but not a full version 2 yet), new smart home devices like upgraded Apple TV, home hub, security cameras, and external Mac displays. Collectively, these suggest Apple is getting ready for a broader push into connected, home and wearable tech, not just phones.
