OpenAI has acquired the team behind Alex Codes, a tool that enabled developers to integrate AI models into Apple’s Xcode development suite. This move strengthens OpenAI’s Codex division, which focuses on AI-driven coding assistants.
Founded in 2024 and backed by Y Combinator, Alex Codes aimed to enhance the coding experience within Xcode by providing AI-powered assistance. However, earlier this year, Apple updated Xcode to allow users to integrate ChatGPT and other AI models without the need for external tools. Despite this, Alex Codes continued to support its users until its acquisition by OpenAI.
Following the acquisition, the Alex Codes team has joined OpenAI’s Codex division. In a post on X, Alex’s founder Daniel Edrisian expressed pride in the team’s accomplishments, stating, “When we started out, Xcode had no AI. Building a ‘Cursor for Xcode’ sounded crazy, but we managed to do it anyway.” He emphasized the team’s dedication to building the best coding agent for iOS and macOS apps.
The Alex Codes app will continue to support existing users but will no longer be available for download after October 1. The team has committed to maintaining the product for current users without adding new features.
This acquisition reflects OpenAI’s ongoing investment in AI-driven developer tools. By integrating experienced developers and their expertise, OpenAI aims to enhance its Codex division and expand its offerings in the competitive AI coding assistant market.
