TikTok is taking a significant step in its evolution from a video-sharing platform to a comprehensive social network by introducing a suite of new features to its direct messaging system. The company has officially confirmed the rollout of voice notes, photos, and videos in one-on-one and group chats, a move that aligns its messaging capabilities with those of established competitors like Instagram, WhatsApp, and iMessage.
The update, which is rolling out globally over the coming weeks, will allow users to send voice notes up to 60 seconds long. This feature capitalizes on a growing trend, particularly among younger users, who often prefer the ease of short audio recordings over traditional text messages. Furthermore, users will now be able to share up to nine images or videos in a single message, with the option to select content directly from their camera or from their phone’s gallery.
TikTok has also incorporated several new safety measures into the update. To prevent unsolicited content, users who are sending a message request for the first time cannot include photos or videos from their camera roll. The platform has also implemented automated systems to detect and block images containing nudity in messages shared by users aged 16 to 18. Additionally, the direct messaging feature remains available only to users who are 16 years or older.
By making its DMs more expressive and interactive, TikTok is signaling a clear ambition to become a central hub for personal communication and connection, not just a place for passive content consumption.
