Google has introduced a major update to its Vids video editor, bringing a mix of new AI-powered tools alongside a free version aimed at everyday users. One of the most notable additions is the ability to generate digital avatars that can deliver scripted messages. By typing out text, users can instantly create videos where a virtual presenter speaks on their behalf. The feature is designed for everything from product demonstrations to onboarding clips, cutting down the need for camera recordings.

The update also includes an automatic trimming tool that removes filler words such as “um” and “ah,” making recorded content flow more smoothly. Another new capability uses the Veo 3 model to turn static images into short animated clips, complete with sound, giving creators a quick way to bring storyboards or stills to life.

Google says more features are on the way, including noise cancellation, background effects similar to those found in Meet, and the ability to export videos in different aspect ratios like portrait and square.

Perhaps the biggest change is that Vids now comes in two versions. A simplified, no-cost edition is rolling out to all users, offering templates, fonts, and stock media for quick edits. The more advanced generative AI tools, including avatars and image-to-video, will remain exclusive to paid Workspace tiers and AI Pro subscribers.

To help creators get started, Google is also launching a YouTube series called “Vids on Vids,” providing step-by-step guidance on everything from planning and scripting to adding animations and transitions.

The company reports that more than a million users have already adopted the platform, signaling growing interest in AI-assisted video production. With these updates, Google is positioning Vids as a tool that blends the simplicity of slide editing with the creativity of modern video storytelling.
