OpenAI Adds Mental Health Reminders to ChatGPT

OpenAI, the company behind the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, has rolled out a new feature designed to encourage users to take breaks. This initiative comes in response to growing concerns and reports about users becoming overly attached or spending excessive time in conversations with the AI, which could potentially impact their mental health.

The new feature works by sending friendly, subtle prompts during long chat sessions. The message might pop up and ask something like, “Isn’t now a good time for a break?” The goal here is to promote a healthier relationship between people and technology. OpenAI has stated that they measure success not just by how long users are on the platform, but by how helpful and effective the service is.

This is part of a bigger effort by the company to act more responsibly. In addition to the break reminders, OpenAI is also working on how the chatbot handles sensitive topics. For instance, instead of giving direct advice on major life decisions, ChatGPT is being trained to ask questions that encourage users to think for themselves. The company is also collaborating with mental health professionals to improve the AI’s ability to recognize signs of emotional distress and point users toward professional resources when needed.
