ChatGPT Nears 700 Million Weekly Users Amid Explosive Growth

OpenAI has confirmed that ChatGPT is on the verge of reaching an astonishing milestone—700 million weekly active users. This figure marks a historic moment for any AI chatbot, showcasing ChatGPT’s unprecedented growth and global popularity.

Nick Turley, VP at OpenAI and head of the ChatGPT app, revealed on social media platform X that ChatGPT had already surpassed 500 million weekly users by the end of March. He noted that the app’s user base has quadrupled compared to the previous year. Turley wrote, “Every day, people and teams are learning, creating, and solving more complex problems. We have a big week ahead. I’m grateful to the team that has made ChatGPT more useful and helped advance our mission of making AI accessible to everyone.”

The rapid rise in ChatGPT’s popularity is partly attributed to the launch of its enhanced image-generation capabilities powered by GPT-4. In early April, OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap stated that more than 130 million users had generated over 700 million images just days after the new feature launched.

OpenAI has also seen a sharp rise in its subscriber numbers. Last week, Lightcap announced that the number of commercial ChatGPT users had reached 5 million, up from 3 million in June—a remarkable increase in a short span.

Market intelligence firm Sensor Tower recently reported that ChatGPT users access the app on average more than 12 days each month. This puts ChatGPT among the most-used platforms, following only Google and X. The report also highlighted that, in the first half of 2025, users spent an average of 16 minutes daily on the ChatGPT app.

Despite this remarkable performance, ChatGPT still trails behind Google’s AI-driven search tool, AI Overviews, which Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai says now serves around 2 billion users per month across more than 200 countries. Google’s Gemini chatbot has also gained traction, surpassing 450 million monthly active users.
