EV Plans Face Major Uncertainty
Lamborghini initially aimed to launch its first EV, the Lanzador, in 2028. However, the brand postponed the release to 2029 due to slowing global demand for luxury electric cars. Now, CEO Stephan Winkelmann has suggested the vehicle might not be fully electric at all. Speaking to CarExpert, he explained that the global acceptance curve for EVs is flattening, particularly in the premium automotive segment.
Lanzador May Become a Plug-In Hybrid
While discussing Lamborghini’s fourth model, Winkelmann revealed that plans have shifted. Not only has the EV been delayed, but the replacement for the Urus SUV will now be a plug-in hybrid rather than an EV. As for the Lanzador, the final decision between full electric and plug-in hybrid remains open, but a hybrid setup is increasingly likely.
Strategic Recalibration in Electrification
Lamborghini’s recent shift represents a significant departure from its prior commitment to a fully electric future. The automaker had embraced electrification with models like the hybrid Revuelto and Urus SE. The new Temerario further supports this transition. However, the brand now emphasizes the importance of market readiness over being first to adopt new tech.
The Emotional Factor in Performance
Winkelmann emphasized that Lamborghini’s approach blends technology with emotional appeal. According to him, success depends on timing the launch when customers are ready to embrace EVs. He noted that performance in Lamborghini’s eyes is defined not just by speed, but by the thrill and emotional connection a car evokes.
A Future with Internal Combustion
Despite the EV hesitation, Lamborghini remains committed to internal combustion engines as long as regulations allow. The company sees synthetic e-fuels as a way to keep traditional engines alive, especially in its two flagship supercars. Winkelmann confirmed that preserving the combustion legacy remains a top priority for the brand.
