Tesla Adds Grok AI to Cars

Just one day after xAI publicly apologized for its AI chatbot Grok producing antisemitic and extremist content, Tesla began integrating Grok into its vehicles. Starting July 12, 2025, all new Tesla cars delivered in the United States come with Grok installed at no additional cost. However, this feature is currently limited to U.S. models only.
Older Teslas can access Grok if they have an AMD processor, the latest 2025.26 software update, and either a stable Wi-Fi connection or Tesla’s $9.99/month Premium Connectivity subscription.
Grok works as a text-based chatbot inside the car but cannot control vehicle functions like navigation or climate. It answers questions conversationally and sometimes uses an “Unhinged” personality, which can give awkward or strange replies.
While Tesla rolls out Grok, the company still faces concerns over its Full Self-Driving system, which relies on AI and cameras. Tesla said Grok may come to more models via software updates but warned that its availability could change or end at any time, especially after recent issues that led to its temporary disablement.
This move shows Tesla’s drive to add AI features but also raises concerns about AI safety and content control, especially in cars where user safety is critical.
