Apple to Restructure iPhone Release Timeline Amid Plans for First Foldable iPhone
Apple is reportedly planning to revamp its iPhone release schedule in 2026 to accommodate the launch of its first foldable device, according to The Information. The foldable iPhone is expected to debut alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and a new “iPhone 18 Air” model. Meanwhile, the standard iPhone 18 will be delayed until spring 2027, launching alongside a follow-up to the iPhone 16E.
The shift is part of Apple’s strategy to streamline a growing iPhone lineup, which could soon include six distinct models. The foldable iPhone is said to adopt a book-style design — not a clamshell — with a 5.7-inch exterior display and an almost 8-inch screen when unfolded. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has previously estimated that the device will be just 4.5–4.8mm thick when open and will feature Face ID rather than Touch ID.
Additionally, Apple is developing a new battery case for the upcoming iPhone 17 Air, which reportedly suffers from below-average battery life in testing. The accessory is expected to address that shortcoming.
As for the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, Apple is said to be introducing under-display Face ID sensors. This would allow for a cleaner front design, leaving only a small cutout in the top-left corner for the front-facing camera.
