On Monday, Apple announced that it will introduce lossless audio and ultra-low latency audio capabilities for AirPods Max headphones when connected via the included USB-C cable.
This upcoming update will enable AirPods Max to support 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio, preserving the quality of original recordings. Additionally, lossless audio will enhance Personalized Spatial Audio, providing a more precise, uncompressed, and immersive listening experience, according to the company.
With Apple Music, users will have access to over 100 million songs in lossless audio. The ultra-low latency audio feature is expected to make the AirPods Max particularly advantageous for music production. By using the USB-C cable, musicians will be able to create and mix their work with Personalized Spatial Audio and head tracking, allowing for high-quality recording and mixing.
Gamers will also benefit from the ultra-low latency audio, experiencing reduced lag with the AirPods Max.
These features will be rolled out in April as part of a free firmware update alongside iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, and macOS Sequoia 15.4, but they will only be available for AirPods Max models equipped with USB-C, not for those that use the Lightning connector.
