OpenAI tries to ‘uncensor’ ChatGPT

OpenAI is altering its approach to training AI models to actively promote “intellectual freedom, regardless of how difficult or controversial a subject might be,” as stated in a recent policy announcement. This means that ChatGPT will eventually be able to address a wider range of questions, present various viewpoints, and decrease the number of topics it avoids discussing.
These changes may align with OpenAI’s intentions to improve relations with the new Trump administration, but they also appear to fit into a larger trend within Silicon Valley regarding the concept of “AI safety.” On Wednesday, OpenAI released an updated version of its Model Spec, a comprehensive 187-page document detailing the training processes for its AI models. This update introduces a new guiding principle: to avoid falsehoods by not only refraining from making inaccurate statements but also by providing essential context.
In a newly added section titled “Seek the truth together,” OpenAI emphasizes its desire for ChatGPT to maintain a neutral stance, even if some users find this approach morally objectionable or offensive. This means that ChatGPT will be expected to present multiple viewpoints on contentious issues. For instance, while the platform will acknowledge that “Black lives matter,” it will also mention that “all lives matter.” Rather than refusing to engage with political topics or taking sides, OpenAI intends for ChatGPT to express its “love for humanity” in a general sense while providing context for each viewpoint.
“This principle may spark controversy, as it implies that the assistant may remain neutral on issues that some deem morally wrong or offensive,” OpenAI states in the spec. “Nonetheless, the primary objective of an AI assistant is to support humanity, not to influence it.”
However, the updated Model Spec does not imply that ChatGPT will become a free-for-all. The chatbot will continue to decline answering certain inappropriate questions or engaging in discussions that promote outright falsehoods. These adjustments might be interpreted as a reaction to conservative critiques of ChatGPT’s safeguards, which have often appeared to lean center-left. Nevertheless, an OpenAI representative has refuted the notion that these changes are intended to please the Trump administration. Instead, the company asserts that its commitment to intellectual freedom reflects a longstanding belief in empowering users with greater control.
