Earlier this year, Google rebranded its Find My Device feature as the Find Hub, adding satellite connectivity and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) support. UWB allows users to locate items with far greater accuracy than traditional Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) tags or crowdsourced networks. Satellite connectivity also lets users share their location even in areas without cellular coverage.
While UWB trackers, like the Moto Tag, provide precise directions and distances to lost items, BLE tags only indicate a general area. Crowdsourced networks rely on another Android device to pick up the BLE signal and send its GPS location via the cloud. This makes UWB far faster and more reliable for tracking nearby items.
Although all Google Pixel Pro models since the Pixel 6 Pro include UWB hardware, the Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 7 Pro cannot use the Find Hub’s UWB precision tracking feature. Google confirmed to Android Authority that only the Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold support UWB precision tracking. The reason why Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 7 Pro are excluded remains unknown.
Other manufacturers, like Samsung, include UWB on select “Ultra,” “Plus,” and Fold models, while Motorola offers UWB support on some of its devices. If you plan to use a Moto Tag or similar UWB tracker, a UWB-enabled phone is required. Google notes that “UWB availability and performance varies by tag and device models with Android 13 and up.”
For Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 7 Pro users, this limitation means waiting for a newer device if they want to take full advantage of UWB’s precision tracking capabilities.
