OpenAI’s AI-Powered Browser Could Redefine Web Use—And Its Risks

OpenAI’s latest move to “power your browser” marks a dramatic shift in how we navigate the web—but it may come with serious security trade-offs. The company’s new browser strategy (codenamed “Atlas”) combines web navigation, conversational AI and agent-style automation into a single interface. Instead of simply typing URLs and clicking links, users will be able to issue natural-language commands, delegate multi-step tasks and let the browser act on their behalf. The underlying vision: a browser not just for browsing, but for doing.

The complication is that granting an AI this level of access introduces a broader and more dangerous attack surface than traditional browsers. Experts warn that when an AI agent can interact with DOM elements, fill forms, navigate across tabs, read and write cookies, manage sessions and act on user behalf, even seemingly benign web content can become a vector for malicious action. For example, malicious actors could embed instructions in comments or web pages that steer the AI agent into performing unintended operations—exfiltrating data, activating cameras, or triggering privileged actions. One academic paper found that agents with high-privilege access succeeded in attacks such as password disclosure or local file access at alarmingly high rates.

During a recent TechCrunch podcast episode, hosts flagged these risks: the trade-off between convenience and control, and whether the average user will understand when their browser isn’t just a tool but an active decision-making system. They discussed how OpenAI’s browser could blur the line between the user’s will and the system’s decision-making—raising questions about transparency, consent and accountability. If the browser mis-interprets a prompt or is manipulated by hidden instructions, who is responsible for the outcome?

OpenAI argues that the benefits are substantial: faster workflows, less tool switching, and deeper integration of AI across the web experience. The company expects users to delegate tasks like “find and compare these three flights, book the cheapest, send me a summary” or “organize my expense receipts from the last week” directly inside the browser. But for that to work safely, they’ll need rigorous safeguards: strict isolation of sensitive tasks, clear user-approval flows, explainable actions, and fallback mechanisms when things go wrong. Without that, the same features that offer productivity gains can also undermine user control and safety.

In short, OpenAI’s browser vision signals what the next stage of web computing might look like—but it also underscores how much remains unresolved in terms of security, trust and user agency. As browsers evolve from passive viewers into active assistants, the question may shift from what we browse to who is browsing on our behalf—and how well we understand the difference.
