A recent APK teardown of Google Photos version 7.51.0 reveals a new feature in development called Me Meme, which uses Google’s Gemini AI to generate custom memes from user photos. The tool appears to allow users to select a reference image—typically a selfie or a photo of a friend—choose from a set of meme templates, and let Gemini insert the person into the meme with AI-generated captions. The only template spotted so far is the classic “This is fine” meme, but the code suggests more options will be available if the feature rolls out publicly. To use Me Meme, users will likely need to have their reference photo backed up in Google Photos, and the system may prompt for a clear, front-facing image to ensure accurate placement. While Google hasn’t officially announced the feature, Android Authority was able to activate it during testing, indicating that a launch could be imminent. There’s no confirmed release timeline, and it’s unclear whether the feature will rely on Google’s Nano Banana architecture or other internal AI tools. Me Meme fits into Google’s broader push to embed generative AI into its core apps, following recent additions like conversational editing and AI-powered video creation. If released, it could offer users a playful way to remix their photo library with minimal effort—though privacy advocates may raise concerns about how facial data is processed and stored.
