Apple’s Foldable iPhone May Cost Less Than Expected

Apple is reportedly preparing to launch its first foldable iPhone in September 2026, and early reports suggest it could be priced lower than anticipated. While initial estimates placed the device between $2,000 and $2,500, new supply chain insights point to a reduced hinge cost—between $70 and $80 instead of the previously expected $100–$120. This cost reduction could allow Apple to either improve margins or pass savings on to consumers, making the foldable iPhone more accessible than rivals like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7.

The device is expected to open horizontally, resembling a Galaxy Z Fold rather than a Flip, and may feature a dual-display setup that unfolds into a 7.58-inch screen. When closed, it will reportedly offer a 5.5-inch external display. Design leaks suggest the foldable iPhone will be ultra-thin—just 4.5mm when open—making it slimmer than the current iPhone Air. Despite its thin profile, Apple is said to be using a titanium body and a new hinge design that minimizes screen creasing, a common issue in foldables.

Apple’s engineering solution involves a metal plate integrated into the display to distribute bending stress and prevent material fatigue. Laser-drilled microstructures are also part of the process, enhancing crease resistance and durability. Analysts believe this innovation could give Apple a competitive edge in foldable tech, especially as the company tends to prioritize refinement over being first to market.

Specs are rumored to include dual 48MP rear cameras, a front-facing camera on the inner display, 12GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. Notably, the device may rely on Touch ID instead of Face ID, likely due to the foldable form factor. This would allow seamless authentication whether the device is open or closed.

If successful, the foldable iPhone could trigger a major upgrade cycle similar to the iPhone X launch in 2017. Analysts predict that iPhone sales in 2026 could rise by 10% compared to 2025, driven by consumer interest in the new form factor and Apple’s reputation for polished hardware.
