Samsung has rolled out the stable One UI 8 update, giving its Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 foldable devices a much-needed boost to Samsung DeX. The update rebuilds DeX on top of Google’s Desktop Mode, addressing long-standing user complaints and adding entirely new features. While the initial rollout felt like a step back in the short term, the redesign is shaping up to unlock significant potential in the future.
Among the new features is the integration of Google Finance into the Now Bar, allowing users to check stock price alerts at the close of trading without unlocking their device. Samsung has also added widget support to DeX, enabling users to place widgets directly on the DeX home screen when connected to an external display. Additionally, users gain more control over mouse behavior and the on-screen keyboard, making the desktop-like experience smoother and more customizable.
The update, which first launched in South Korea, is now expanding to the U.S. and other markets. Users can now pin any app to the taskbar in DeX, enjoy a new quick full-screen button for app windows, and configure advanced keyboard settings on both the Z Fold 7 and Flip 7. These changes are aimed at making DeX not only more powerful but also more intuitive for everyday use.
Despite these improvements, Samsung acknowledges that DeX still lacks certain features compared to the classic version. For example, disabling mouse continuity across displays is not yet supported, though Google is reportedly adding this feature to Android’s Desktop Mode, which should eventually make its way to DeX.
Overall, the One UI 8 update represents a major step forward for DeX, moving it from a niche feature into something more practical for daily productivity. By collaborating with Google and expanding customization options, Samsung is signaling its long-term vision for DeX, aiming to position it as a true PC alternative for foldable users.
