Microsoft is enhancing the gaming experience on Windows 11 by adding new functionality to Xbox controllers, allowing for a more seamless, console-like interaction. In the latest Windows 11 Insider build (26220.6682), a new long-press function for the Xbox button has been introduced. This change, which is part of Microsoft’s broader strategy for upcoming handheld gaming PCs, makes it easier for gamers to navigate their computer without a keyboard or mouse.
The new feature works by remapping the long-press action of the Xbox button. Previously, a quick press of the Xbox button would open the Game Bar, while a long-press would turn off the controller. With this update, the functionality has been refined:
- Quick Press: Continues to open the Game Bar, providing access to widgets, performance metrics, and other gaming-related tools.
- Long Press (a few seconds): Now opens the Task View, which is a built-in Windows feature that allows users to quickly switch between all open applications and games. This is designed to improve multitasking for PC gamers and is a key feature being tested for devices like the upcoming ROG Xbox Ally.
- Extended Long Press (8 seconds): This remains the command to turn off the controller.
The change aligns with Microsoft’s efforts to create a more cohesive and intuitive ecosystem for gaming on Windows 11. By integrating a core navigation tool like Task View directly into the controller, Microsoft is making the PC platform more accessible and convenient for those who prefer to game from their couch or on a handheld device. While this feature is currently in a preview build for Windows Insiders, it is expected to roll out to the general public in the coming months as part of Microsoft’s ongoing commitment to improving the Windows gaming experience.
