Spotify Rolls Out Lossless Audio for Premium Users
Spotify is giving its Premium subscribers a long-awaited upgrade: the ability to stream music in lossless audio quality. Starting now in several countries, this move means music will be heard without compression for much better clarity and richness.
Listeners will be able to access tracks in up to 24-bit / 44.1 kHz FLAC, a format that preserves more of the original sound detail than standard streaming quality. While the feature is free for those already paying for Premium, users will need devices that can support lossless playback—particularly wired or Wi-Fi connected speakers and headphones—to hear the difference. Bluetooth devices, for now, won’t offer full lossless fidelity due to bandwidth constraints.
The rollout is gradual. Some countries already have access, and more regions will get it over the coming weeks. Users will receive notifications in the app when Lossless becomes available on their devices. Enabling it requires going into audio or media settings and turning on the lossless mode for streaming and downloads; it must be switched on separately for each device.
To make the transition smooth, Spotify introduced visual indicators in the player view showing when a track is playing in Lossless mode. Also, there’s a toggle for whether Lossless audio should be used over Wi-Fi, cellular data, or for offline downloads—so users can balance audio quality with data usage.
This feature brings Spotify in line with competitors who’ve offered lossless or high-resolution audio for years. For many users, especially audiophiles or those using high-fidelity equipment, this change could significantly improve listening experiences. It also reflects growing demand for better audio quality, even as streaming becomes more dominant.
