X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, is taking a significant step in enhancing user privacy by expanding access to its encrypted messaging feature, XChat, beyond the realm of Premium subscribers.
Initially introduced in beta earlier this year, XChat now allows a much wider audience—even those without a paid subscription—to use its secure chat system. The experience lives separately from the traditional direct messaging inbox under a dedicated “Chat” tab. On desktop, this option appears above message requests; on mobile, it’s located in the main navigation pane, just above Communities.
XChat focuses on encrypted communication, supporting features like file and media sharing, group conversations, pinning, and read/unread markers. Setting it up requires creating a simple four-digit passcode to safeguard access—only users who have both enabled XChat and known their passcodes can exchange messages. Meanwhile, conversations from the older system now appear under an “Unencrypted” tab for clarity and separation.
While XChat adds robust options for secure messaging, advanced privacy tools like disappearing messages are expected to roll out shortly, further enhancing user control over their communications.
This expansion aims to position X as a more feature-rich and privacy-aware platform. Offering encrypted messaging to all users aligns with broader strategic goals to transform the service into an integrated space for communication, interaction, and beyond.
