Samsung is reportedly preparing to launch its most ambitious foldable smartphone yet, a trifold device that could fundamentally change the mobile market. Rumors from multiple sources suggest the device, potentially named the Galaxy Z TriFold or Galaxy G Fold, is slated for a public reveal as early as October, with a release to store shelves in November.
The trifold design, featuring two inward-folding hinges, is a significant departure from Samsung’s current Galaxy Z Fold series. When fully unfolded, the device is expected to offer a massive 9.96-inch display, providing a true near-tablet experience. In its folded state, it will have a more conventional 6.54-inch screen, allowing for standard smartphone use. The device is rumored to be powered by the flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset and feature a new silicon-carbon battery for improved charging speeds. It is also expected to have a triple rear camera system with 8K video recording capabilities.
The software, likely One UI 8, is being specifically optimized for this unique form factor. Leaks suggest a new multitasking feature, “Split Trio,” will allow users to run three apps side-by-side on the large internal screen. This feature could also be mirrored on the device’s cover screen. However, this innovative design comes with a substantial price tag. Industry analysts project the device could cost around $3,000, a significant jump from the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s $1,999 price. This cost is attributed to the extensive research and development required for the triple-display, two-hinge mechanism and the software needed to manage it.
Samsung is reportedly taking a cautious approach to the launch with a limited initial production run of 50,000 units. This is a strategic move to gauge market interest before committing to larger-scale mass production. The company is betting that this new form factor will appeal to mobile professionals and power users who need a desktop-class screen in a portable device.
