A recent technical report from Google has shed light on the energy consumption of its Gemini AI. According to the report, a single text-based prompt to the Gemini app uses 0.24 watt-hours of energy. This is a remarkably small amount, equivalent to watching less than nine seconds of television.
The report also provides additional details on the environmental impact, noting that a single prompt emits 0.03 grams of carbon dioxide and uses 0.26 milliliters of water. These figures represent the median energy usage for a text-based prompt on the Gemini app and do not account for voice prompts or other media.
This study is part of Google’s ongoing effort to improve the efficiency of its AI models. The company’s report also highlights a significant achievement, with the Gemini app’s total carbon footprint dropping by a factor of 44 over a 12-month period, demonstrating an effort to make its AI more sustainable.
