Obsidian Entertainment has provided new details on its highly anticipated sci-fi RPG sequel, The Outer Worlds 2, which is set to launch on October 29, 2025. The game will not only be available on Xbox and PC, but also on the PlayStation 5, a significant development in the gaming industry as console exclusives become less common.
The initial announcement of the game at E3 2021 was a humorous, self-aware teaser that openly admitted to the lack of finished assets, promising a new adventure in a new star system with a new crew. Since then, a more in-depth gameplay trailer was revealed at The Game Awards 2024, confirming that the game will retain the core first-person shooter mechanics that fans enjoyed in the original. Players can expect to utilize both ranged and melee weapons, and the fan-favorite “Tactical Time Dilation (TTD)” mechanic will be making a return.
While the story remains under wraps, the developers have stated that the game will maintain the “Same Outer Worlds” tone, characterized by its witty satire and vibrant, retro-futuristic style. The game will feature a new cast of characters, although subtle tie-ins to the original—like the iconic Spacer’s Choice “Moon Man” logo—are expected.
Gameplay improvements are also on the way. A preview of the game’s opening hour showed enhanced combat, and a new gear item, the N-Ray Scanner, will allow players to see enemies through walls. The game is not a seamless open world, and will feature brief loading screens between locations. Character building has been streamlined for a more efficient experience.
For those eager to jump into the Halcyon system, the game is now available for pre-order. The standard edition is priced at $70, while the premium edition is available for $100 and includes early access, a DLC pass, and other digital content.
