The Volkswagen Tiguan has long been a solid contender in the compact SUV segment, but it’s often struggled to match the dominance of rivals like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. That could change with the all-new 2025 Tiguan, which represents a huge step forward in design, performance, and quality.

Built on VW’s updated MQB Evo platform, the new Tiguan sheds 170 pounds compared to the outgoing model. It features a modern, cohesive exterior design with slim LED headlights connected by a light bar, a sharper rear end with distinctive taillights, and even an optional illuminated VW badge.

Inside, the cabin finally delivers the premium feel buyers expect. On higher trims like the SEL R-Line, the Tiguan offers perforated leather seats, ambient lighting, and a massive 15-inch touchscreen. Materials across the cabin feel more upscale than before, with tasteful use of wood and soft plastics.

Under the hood, the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine has been revised with a new turbocharger and fuel-injection system. Output now rises to 201 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque (207 lb-ft for FWD models). Power is routed through an eight-speed automatic transmission, with AWD available via VW’s 4Motion system.

On the road, the Tiguan delivers strong low-end torque, smooth highway passing power, and surprisingly fun handling for the segment. The quick-shifting eight-speed gearbox complements the powertrain well.

One small but welcome detail: Volkswagen listened to customers and added back a physical volume knob, cleverly integrated into a drive mode selector near the gearshift.

Pros

  • Sharp, modern exterior styling

  • High-quality, well-designed interior

  • Engaging driving dynamics

  • Return of the volume knob

Cons

  • Too many touch-capacitive controls remain

  • Ride quality is firmer than some rivals, especially with larger wheels

Verdict

With a starting price of $30,920 (including destination), the 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan is a compelling option in the compact SUV space. While its reliance on touch-sensitive controls and slightly stiff ride may frustrate some buyers, its premium feel, improved performance, and competitive pricing make it one of the strongest Tiguans ever.
