Meta has entered a strategic licensing agreement with the independent AI lab Midjourney to integrate its advanced image and video generation technology into Meta’s future AI offerings. This marks a shift toward collaborative innovation rather than solely in-house development.
Meta’s newly appointed Chief AI Officer, Alexandr Wang, emphasized that the company is embracing an “all-of-the-above” AI strategy—combining elite talent, robust computing infrastructure, and partnerships with standout tech players. Under the deal, Meta’s researchers will work closely with Midjourney’s team to incorporate their aesthetic capabilities—known for producing detailed, artistically polished outputs—into upcoming products across Meta’s platforms.
This move comes amid growing competition from major players with strong AI tools. Meta’s own image tool, Imagine, and its video system, Movie Gen, have fallen behind alternatives offered by rivals. Midjourney’s cutting-edge models—especially its video model released earlier this year—promise to bring visual innovation to a broad range of Meta services, including the Meta AI app, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
Midjourney’s founder reaffirmed that the lab will remain independent and self-funded, committed to its mission of delivering artistic AI across billions of users. The partnership furthers Meta’s ambition to integrate generative AI deeply into its platforms, enhancing user engagement and differentiating its content ecosystem.
