X’s subscription revenue is facing pressure due to a significant decline in new app installs on Android devices. According to data from Appfigures, new downloads of the X app on Google Play dropped by 44% year-over-year in July 2025. This downturn on Android is in stark contrast to the app’s performance on Apple’s App Store, where installs grew by 15% during the same period.
The slump in Android installs appears to be impacting the platform’s overall momentum and, consequently, its subscription revenue. Appfigures reported that X generated $16.9 million in net revenue in July, a slight increase from June but down from a peak of $18.8 million in March 2025. While most of X’s revenue still comes from advertising, the reduced demand on Android is contributing to the overall financial pressure.
In response, Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, has announced a push to rebuild the Android app, acknowledging user complaints about its instability. The company is actively hiring for an “Android Dream Team” to address these performance issues. The data suggests that while X maintains a strong user base on iOS, stabilizing the Android experience is critical for the company to reverse its declining install trends and shore up its subscription-based revenue streams.
