Microsoft is reportedly testing a new feature for Windows 11 called “agentic companions,” which could bring AI companions directly to the Taskbar. References to the feature have been spotted in Insider builds, although recent previews have removed the term “agentic,” likely to keep the feature under wraps.
The AI companion could potentially have a dedicated Taskbar button, allowing users to access help for ongoing tasks or activities. While exact details are scarce, Microsoft is expected to prioritize its Copilot AI chatbot, though competitors like Gemini and ChatGPT might also play a role. The companion may even integrate with Copilot Vision, enabling the AI to “see” your screen and provide contextual assistance.
This initiative aligns with Microsoft’s broader goal of making Windows more “agentic,” meaning the operating system could act with some degree of autonomy. Recent additions to the Copilot ecosystem include features like Click To Do, which scans your screen and offers context-based actions. While the AI companion’s capabilities remain uncertain, the feature promises a new level of task support, though users may prefer it to remain optional to avoid distractions.
