Apple has confirmed that its upcoming iOS 26, along with iPadOS 26 and macOS Tahoe 26, will usher in a major AI upgrade by integrating OpenAI’s newest model—GPT‑5—into its Apple Intelligence system.
Currently, Apple’s Siri and systemwide writing and visual tools tap into GPT‑4o, enabling smarter responses, document and image understanding, and creative assistance.
Starting this fall, that engine will shift to GPT‑5, promising faster and more intelligent handling of complex queries.
The announcement comes after OpenAI rolled out GPT‑5 to all users in early August, signaling the next wave in generative AI’s evolution. While Apple hasn’t specified whether GPT‑5 will debut in developer or public betas, the update aligns with the usual release window for major software and the launch of the next iPhone generation.
Integration with GPT‑5 means users can expect more nuanced and context-aware assistance across Siri, writing tools, and visual intelligence, all while retaining Apple’s privacy safeguards—like obscuring IP addresses and preventing OpenAI from storing personal data. Apple’s move brings it in line with accelerating AI trends and positions its ecosystem for smarter interactions in the months ahead.
