Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has given the public its first real glimpse at GPT-5, the highly anticipated next-generation large language model. In a recently shared screenshot on the social media platform X, Altman showcased GPT-5 responding to a question about TV show recommendations. The answer not only highlighted the model’s analytical sharpness and precision but also hinted that an official release could be just around the corner.
Earlier, Altman had praised the sci-fi animated series Pantheon—which delves into themes of artificial general intelligence (AGI). When asked by a user if GPT-5 would recommend the show, Altman responded with a simple yet telling screenshot: “Yes.” The screenshot appears to be the first public image of GPT-5’s user interface, revealing how it not only recommends the series but does so with impressive depth and reasoning.
The model describes Pantheon as “deep, emotional, and philosophically rich,” also noting its perfect critic score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. These insights suggest GPT-5’s ability to gather and synthesize accurate information from a variety of sources, echoing real-world critical consensus.
Interestingly, the screenshot also indicates that GPT-5 retains ChatGPT’s characteristic use of the em dash—a stylistic hallmark of the AI’s previous responses. The timing of this preview is significant, as OpenAI faces mounting competition from the likes of Google DeepMind, Meta, xAI, and Anthropic. Expectations are sky-high that GPT-5 will represent a major leap forward, offering improvements such as expanded context windows, enhanced precision, advanced multimodal capabilities, and autonomous agent features.
While OpenAI hasn’t confirmed a specific launch date, this teaser strongly implies that the public debut of GPT-5 is approaching. Industry insiders have previously speculated that the model would roll out sometime in August.
