Sony and Honda’s joint venture, Sony Honda Mobility, has officially revealed its first electric vehicle, the Afeela 1, with production set to begin in the U.S. by 2025 and deliveries expected mid‑2026. The EV will be built in Ohio and sold directly to customers in California—an approach already facing legal resistance from the California New Car Dealers Association over dealership bypassing.
The Afeela 1 will come in two trims—Origin and Signature—priced at $89,900 and $102,900, respectively. Both include a three‑year subscription to connected features like ADAS, an AI assistant, and 5G-powered services.
Underneath, it’s equipped with a dual‑motor AWD system producing 483 hp and powered by a 91 kWh battery, offering an estimated 300 miles of range. Charging is handled via NACS, allowing access to Tesla Superchargers, with support for 150 kW DC fast charging.
Inside the cabin, the Afeela 1 blends recycled materials, a panoramic screen powered by Snapdragon Digital Chassis, and graphics rendered using Unreal Engine. Voice interactions are handled by Sony’s Personal Agent, and over 40 sensors enable Level 2+ driver assistance.
Preorders opened for California customers with a refundable $200 deposit, but the limited market launch and premium price point have raised questions about the car’s mainstream appeal.
