Tech giant OnePlus has launched its third-generation tablet, the Pad 3, positioning it as a premium entertainment device while acknowledging ongoing challenges in the productivity space.

The new tablet arrives with a $699.99 price tag, representing a $150 increase from its predecessor, as OnePlus continues to refine its tablet strategy in an increasingly competitive market.

Key Hardware Improvements Drive Entertainment Experience

The Pad 3 showcases several notable hardware enhancements over the previous generation. The device now sports a 13.2-inch LCD display with 3392 x 2400 resolution, offering improved visual clarity for media consumption. OnePlus has redesigned the chassis with a slimmer, flatter aluminum construction, though the 675g weight makes extended handheld use challenging.

Audio capabilities receive significant attention with an eight-speaker configuration featuring four woofers and four tweeters strategically positioned around the device. This enhanced sound system delivers notably improved audio for streaming services, gaming, and multimedia content.

Battery performance sees incremental gains through a 12,140mAh cell that OnePlus claims can fully charge in 92 minutes. Independent testing showed the device charging from 20% to 80% in 76 minutes, with minimal battery drain during typical usage scenarios.

Software Advancements Include AI Integration

Running OxygenOS 15, the Pad 3 incorporates several Google AI features previously unavailable on OnePlus tablets. Circle to Search functionality allows users to instantly research on-screen content, while Google’s Gemini Assistant integrates directly into the system via power button access or keyboard shortcuts.

Additional AI-powered tools include writing assistance, voice note cleanup that removes filler words while preserving original audio, and basic photo editing capabilities like AI Detail Boost with reversible edits.

The company has significantly improved its software support commitment, now offering three Android version updates and six years of security patches – a two-year extension from the previous model’s support timeline.

Productivity Limitations Persist Despite Improvements

While the larger display and Open Canvas multitasking system enable running up to three applications simultaneously, the Pad 3 continues to face fundamental Android ecosystem limitations for professional use. Many productivity applications, including Slack and Airtable, remain unoptimized for large-screen Android devices.

The optional Smart Keyboard accessory, priced at $199, features larger keys and includes NFC file sharing capabilities plus a dedicated Gemini AI launch key. However, trackpad performance issues and stability concerns when used away from flat surfaces continue to hamper the typing experience for extended work sessions.

Market Position Amid Rising Costs

Industry analysts note that while the Pad 3’s price increase might have been problematic in previous market conditions, current economic factors including tariffs and widespread cost increases across technology products help maintain its competitive positioning. The device competes directly with Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S10 FE at $749.99, though Samsung offers superior long-term software support with seven years of updates.

Verdict: Entertainment Excellence, Productivity Potential Unrealized

The OnePlus Pad 3 succeeds as an entertainment-focused tablet, excelling at media consumption, casual gaming, and light multitasking scenarios. The 7:5 aspect ratio proves ideal for reading, while the 144Hz refresh rate ensures smooth visual performance across applications.

However, the device falls short of delivering the laptop-replacement experience that many users seek from premium tablets. Android ecosystem limitations, combined with accessory performance issues, prevent the Pad 3 from achieving true productivity tablet status.

For consumers prioritizing media consumption and casual computing tasks, the Pad 3 represents solid value despite its price increase. Those requiring serious productivity capabilities may find better options elsewhere in the current tablet market.
