Former Siri chief John Giannandrea reportedly advocated for Apple to select Google’s Gemini chatbot instead of ChatGPT for Siri’s initial chatbot integration last year, as highlighted by a Bloomberg report examining Apple’s inconsistent AI initiatives.
Giannandrea, a former Google executive who experienced a leadership demotion in March, expressed concerns that OpenAI’s ChatGPT lacked long-term viability and failed to safeguard sensitive personal data. Nevertheless, Apple proceeded to announce the integration of ChatGPT during the WWDC 2024, making the feature accessible to users by December.
This integration allows users to consult ChatGPT when Siri cannot provide an answer. Additionally, Apple has indicated plans to connect more chatbots, including Google’s Gemini, to Siri.
Furthermore, Apple is reportedly in early discussions with the AI-powered search engine Perplexity to potentially offer it as an alternative to ChatGPT within Siri and as a search option in the Safari browser.
