Instagram unveiled its latest feature, Blend, which allows users to craft a personalized reels feed tailored for both themselves and their friends. This feature is invite-only and can be set up with a single friend or within a group chat. Each day, the custom feeds will be updated with fresh content.
The announcement aligns with a report from TechCrunch in March 2024, indicating that the platform was in the process of developing this feature.
After joining or accepting an invitation to a Blend, users can explore reels curated specifically for everyone in the chat. When a group member reacts to a reel, Instagram will send a notification, enabling ongoing conversations in the direct messaging (DM) chat.
The concept behind Blend is to help users discover the types of reels their friends enjoy while fostering connections and exploring new content together. This feature aims to reintroduce a social aspect to Instagram, shifting the focus back to sharing moments with friends, which has somewhat diminished in recent years due to the overwhelming presence of influencers and advertisements. With Blend’s introduction, Instagram is offering a unique feature not found on TikTok, one of its primary competitors.
For Instagram, Blend has the potential to enhance the discovery and viewing time of reels on the platform, as it promotes users watching short-form content collaboratively.
To initiate a Blend, start a one-on-one or group DM chat and click on the new Blend icon at the top of the chat. After that, select “Invite” to invite others from your chat to join the Blend. The Blend is created once at least one person in the chat accepts the invitation. You can access a Blend again by returning to the DM chat and tapping the Blend icon.
It’s important to highlight that Blend shares similarities with Spotify’s feature of the same name, which enables users to merge their musical preferences into a shared playlist that refreshes daily.
