YouTube is considering the introduction of a feature that would enable users to set a daily timer to limit their time on Shorts.
Recent discoveries from the beta version of the YouTube app, initially reported by Android Authority, indicate that the platform is working on a feature to assist users in curbing their continuous scrolling through Shorts.
YouTube confirmed to TechCrunch that, although this feature is not currently in public testing, it is “exploring this for the future,” according to a company representative.
The code suggests that the daily timer will allow users to specify a certain amount of hours. Once this time is exhausted, Shorts will be paused, making them inaccessible for the rest of the day. However, it is also indicated that users will still be able to access “individual Shorts,” meaning not all short videos will be completely blocked.
Currently, YouTube offers a “Take a Break” reminder that users can activate for regular videos on the platform.
YouTube’s exploration of measures to combat doomscrolling aligns with a rising trend among users who are downloading applications aimed at managing their screen time. Some devices, such as a specific fob, temporarily restrict access to certain apps on users’ phones, underscoring the growing concern surrounding social media addiction. Additionally, major companies like Apple and Google offer tools to help users manage their doomscrolling behaviors.
