Initially announced in 2012, Mewgenics is making a return with a notably quirky trailer.
This cat-breeding RPG, which serves as a follow-up to Super Meat Boy, is set to launch in 2025, according to a new trailer released by IGN and updates on the game’s Steam page.
Mewgenics is a unique fusion of a turn-based RPG and an offbeat cat simulation game, originating from Team Meat—the development duo comprising Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes. Throughout 2013, Team Meat teased details about Mewgenics but eventually decided to place the project on hold in 2014 to concentrate on completing Super Meat Boy Forever, a mobile sequel to their acclaimed title.
After McMillen departed from Team Meat in 2018 to dedicate his efforts to The Binding of Isaac, he took Mewgenics with him, and the game has been steadily progressing towards release since then. The latest trailer suggests that repeatable turn-based battles will now play a significant role in Mewgenics, while still showcasing McMillen’s signature gross-out animation style and a variety of cat-themed furniture.
For those interested in the evolution of the game since its decade-long journey, McMillen and co-developer Tyler Glaiel have been maintaining a steady stream of blog posts on Steam, providing insights into various aspects of the development process. Additionally, fans can anticipate further updates soon, as the developers have announced that IGN will be providing hands-on coverage of Mewgenics in May.
