This weekend, Minecraft has taken center stage for internet users, kicking off with the release of a Minecraft movie starring Hollywood icons Jack Black and Jason Momoa, which has since sparked a wave of ‘Chicken Jockey’ memes across social media. Adding to the excitement, Google has announced an innovative use of the game in its AI development efforts.

While the movie might cater mostly to die-hard fans and younger audiences, Google’s AI advancement is noteworthy. The tech company’s DeepMind team has developed an AI named Dreamer, which has achieved the remarkable feat of mastering Minecraft independently in just nine days—an important milestone in the realm of AI self-improvement.
Dreamer’s learning process sets it apart from earlier AI models that depended on extensive human gameplay footage for training. Instead, the AI learned to navigate Minecraft without any initial human guidance. Researchers from Google DeepMind and the University of Toronto designed Dreamer to operate on a distinctive reinforcement learning system that rewarded it for acquiring diamonds, a prized resource in the game.
Rather than receiving detailed instructions, Dreamer was encouraged to explore and refine its strategies through experimentation. Every half hour, researchers reset the Minecraft world, requiring the AI to quickly adjust to a new, randomly generated environment. Despite this constant challenge, Dreamer demonstrated rapid improvement. By the conclusion of the study, it could mine diamonds in under 30 minutes—matching human players—after just nine days of gameplay.

The success of Dreamer stemmed from its capability to envision future scenarios. Google DeepMind researcher Danijar Hafner stated, “Dreamer represents a significant advancement towards general AI systems.” Rather than aimlessly experimenting with different tactics, the AI created a mental model of its surroundings, allowing it to simulate actions before carrying them out. This ability to “imagine the future” enabled Dreamer to focus on the most effective routes to achieving its objectives.
Dreamer’s learning process is reminiscent of how humans enhance their skills through experience. It assimilated information from its environment, recognized successful actions, and eliminated ineffective ones. This approach contrasts sharply with traditional AI models, which typically rely on extensive datasets derived from human input. The Google researchers noted, “Dreamer is, to our knowledge, the first algorithm to collect diamonds in Minecraft from scratch without human data or curricula.”
