Microsoft will discontinue support for its Remote Desktop app for Windows on May 27th. Users who rely on this app to connect to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, or Microsoft Dev Box will need to switch to the new Windows app, which was launched in September.
The updated Windows app offers features such as multimonitor support, dynamic display resolutions, and simplified access to cloud PCs and virtual desktops. Microsoft has indicated that “connections to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box via the Remote Desktop app from the Microsoft Store will be blocked after May 27th, 2025.”
It’s important to note that the current Remote Desktop app is distinct from Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Connection app, which has been included in Windows for over two decades. This legacy app will remain available in Windows 11 after the May deadline, and users can continue to connect to machines using it until the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is supported in the new Windows app.
The reference to RDP support suggests that Microsoft may eventually enable personal accounts within the Windows app. Currently, access is limited to users with work or school Microsoft accounts. This aligns with Microsoft’s broader goal of transitioning Windows to the cloud to facilitate enhanced AI-driven services and a seamless digital experience for users.
